Listeners can do without biased English commentary

Listening to commentary on an English football game is a lot of fun. However, after a while you will start to wonder whether you are getting the real picture or whether the game is being described in a biased manner. Most English football fans want to see their team win and understandably so. However, should this desire be emphasised when commentating on a game of English football?

No doubt being biased for or against a team is perfectly understandable – within limits. Sometimes, the commentator can become blinded by his or her own views about certain teams and that is when their judgment becomes clouded and the opinions expressed can be less than honest and straightforward.

To make matters worse, and certainly more serious, sometimes the commentary can be no better than an extension of a certain club (or country’s) doctrine and this is when all sense of objectivity is lost. This is also when you will end up listening to somebody doing nothing more than advertising a certain football team.

The job of a commentator is to inform, explain and analyse the game as it unfolds – not to shove their point of view down our throats. However, when commentating on a national team, it is alright for a commentator to vent expressions that are a mirror of the national mood. The need is therefore to rise above doctrines and the madding crowd’s own biased opinions. Objectivity should never be lost; however, this is easier said than done.
